With Catalan president, Artur Mas signing the authorization for the non-binding Catalan Independence Referendum on Saturday, it’s opened up a cyclone of questions, mainly due to the fact that Spain, unlike the more enlightened United Kingdom, has no plans to allow it.

We talk a lot about Catalan wines here not Spanish politics and so it’s important to ask how this might affect Catalan wines in Spain as they comprise 20% of the production in what is now the country that produces the most wine in the world. I discussed all of this at length here.

The article had it’s detractors who were basically just critical about the referendum which has no actual legal bearing and is just a “consultation”. I was even called “joker” by a well known and very blustery wine writer in Madrid to which I respond that I’m more of a “midnight toker”. Anyways, enjoy the read and feel free to chime in on the discussion unless it’s to bitch about the stupid Catalan language in which case, email me so I can properly ignore it there.
