To love the wines of Burgundy has for some time been a cursed passion as the prices for top wines make them far too costly to enjoy on regular occasion unless perhaps one is a member of the “yacht-ed” class. I, like most people, am not “en-yacht-ed” and it’s why during a recent interview Burgundy export legend, Becky Wasserman make a stand-out comment along the lines of, “Don’t search out the Grand or Premier Cru wines, look to the regional blends. That is where the value lies.” It’s sound advice and I took her 50 plus years working with the wines. By way of example, I’d tasted the Bourgogne Rouge of Forey Père et Fils during a workshop last year and, at 18€ a bottle, found it to be an excellent value–for Burgundy–thus two cases found their way into my cellar.
