DO Penedès & ‘native’ reds

In simpler times, if one were drinking a white wine from Spain, it would most likely have been a white from Penedès. This shouldn’t come as much of a shock given that 80% of the DO’s production is white wine. A great deal of this is driven by how much DO Penedès and DO Cava are in a long-term relationship given that the latter fully engulfs the former and Penedès is in reality the main region for vineyards that go into the sparkling wine with vineyard owners able to classify as one or the other from year to year. You will probably not be shocked that in these warmer, Mediterranean lands, white grapes weren’t always the fashion.
