I salute you, Buster

The history of the Buster Brown cocktail is up for debate. The name, I’m guessing, comes from this comic book character but this cocktail ain’t for the kiddies, so I don’t get it. Maybe it’s a tweak of the always fantastic Mr. Twain. However it ends up, it’s such a simple, classic cocktail that you can’t not love it.

60ml Bourbon
15ml lemon juice
Splash of simple syrup
2 dashes orange bitters (preferably Reagan’s)
Shake with ice, garnish with a lemon peel

And that’s it! Of course, it can go really badly. For starters, using a crappy Bourbon, doesn’t get you anywhere. I prefer Bulleit when feeling flush, but Four Roses works just fine. One of the big issues I’ve seen when getting it at a bar in that they make it too sweet and lemony. You need just a splash of the syrup and just half a small lemon. Anymore and you’ve basically created a Mike’s Hard Lemonade which is fine if wear cargo shorts, gelled hair, and drive down to Charleston to party on long weekends. If you find yourself more of a cravat-wearing brandy sniffer, then don’t go there.

Just remember, if in doubt, add more Bourbon. If you can drink it straight, you can drink it in a cocktail. Just don’t give it “the bird“. That’s not good for anyone.
