Happy Cinco

For those reading this outside the US, today is Cinco de Mayo, or more plainly, the Fifth of May. But, we always say it in Spanish because it is the celebration of a Mexican military victory of France that was very important to Mexican history. That and anybody seems to like to celebrate when they beat the French.
So, like any holiday that America co-opts (i.e. Saint Patrick’s or Guy Fawkes?), we will be drinking today. The preferred drink of choice being Mexican beer like Corona, Dos Equis, Tecate, Negra Modelo, and a slew of others. The beer washes down burritos and tacos eaten with great abandon. Ironically of course, the first one isn’t really a Mexican food, but hey, it’s all in the spirit, right?
So, wherever you are, lift a Meixcan beer if you can and toast the Fith of May! I actually won’t be, since I’m at a contemporary dance performance in Berkeley where Mexican food is not worth a peseta.
