It’s pretty hard to come by these days, but if you look around you’ll find it. In back alleys and small places in areas of town you don’t usually go, you can get your hands on some of this coke that the Mexicans enjoy. It’s good stuff. It gives a real pick up without any the harmful crap in American coke and best of all, the bottle is much easier to recycle because it’s glass.
Yup, that’s right Mexican Coca-Cola is coming across the border these days and people never filled me in on this until just recently when I was at a Mexican joint and picked up a 1/2 liter bottle. Much like the Dr. Pepper I had in London, it was much less sweet and more flavorful than what you usually get in the US. What’s the secret? Sugar. Yeah, sugar and no corn syrup to be found. Such a nice change and also something that I’ll actually drink.
Besides the lack of high fructose corn syrup and the other crap that myself and others find to be the work of the devil, this was a Coke like I used to remember, back in, well, whenever it was before they were putting junk in to Coke. In addition to it being more flavorful and not leaving that weird film on my teeth I get from American Coke, it also has less calories. Screwy huh? They use sugar and it has less calories.
So, why on earth would they use corn syrup instead for the local Coke? Simple, it’s cheaper and it keeps you wanting more because it leaves you unsatisfied. While I don’t drink soda in general, I may enjoy a nice Coca-Cola from south of the border from time to time now that I know this.
