This is a bit of a personal prav here. My dad did this to the incoming waterline at my family's house. The old pipe broke in one spot and instead of putting in new pipe, he used an old piece of automotive radiator hose to bridge the gap. It held for an amazingly long time until the weather dropped below freezing.
